Further Protected Industrial Action Impacting some Ferry Services

Transdev is asking customers of Brisbane Ferries to plan ahead as Members of the Maritime Union of Australia (MUA) and the Australian Maritime Officers Union (AMOU) are taking further Protected Industrial Action for 24 hours from 4am on Thursday 20 December to 4am on Friday 21 December.

Transdev operates the CityCat, CityHopper and CityFerry services on the Brisbane River on behalf of Brisbane City Council.

Transdev’s Managing Director Tilly Loughborough apologises to customers for any inconvenience the Union’s industrial action may cause, and encourages them to make alternative plans for travel on Thursday where possible.

“We will do everything we can to keep as many services running as possible, but do encourage those customers who are able to, to make alternative travel arrangements for Thursday,” Ms. Loughborough said

“We’ve reached out to the Fair Work Commission to ask for their assistance with our negotiations and we have a hearing scheduled on Thursday 20 December. It is therefore surprising to receive the notification of intention to take industrial action by the unions.”

CityCat services will be running at a reduced frequency on Thursday, and are expected to be busier than usual. Therefore customers are encouraged to use alternative routes to travel where they are available.

  • Transdev, the Maritime Union of Australia and the Australian Maritime Officers Union have been working hard to reach an in-principle Enterprise Agreement since 27 November 2017, with the current Agreement expiring on 16 May 2018.
  • Transdev has provided the unions with three offers during a 12 month negotiation period and are yet to receive any counter-proposals.
  • The objectives for the negotiations included providing better work life balance and greater take home pay for crew.
  • Transdev has offered pay increases for all crew as part of the negotiations to date.
  • Transdev believes their current wage offer is fair and reliable and includes:
    o Wage increases for CityCat Masters of 6% in year one, followed by 2.3% in year two (or WPI whichever is greater) and 5% (or WPI whichever is greater) in year three; a total minimum increase of 13.3% over the three years.
    o Wage increases for other Crew between 3 and 5% in year one, followed by 2.3% in year two (or WPI whichever greater) and 3 to 5% (or WPI whichever is greater) in year three; a total minimum increase of between 8.3 and of 9.3% over three years.
  • Ferry crew in Brisbane are currently paid at or above the National Award rate.
  • Transdev wishes to agree to the best deal within our means for crew, hence spending considerable time meeting with the Bargaining Representatives over the course of 20 meetings in the last 12 months.
  • MUA’s claim of 20% and AMOU’s claim of a 30% pay increase in year one alone is not sustainable.
  • Transdev’s service delivery and maintenance practices are strictly governed by the industry regulators: the Australian Maritime Safety Authority and Maritime Safety Queensland. This is also externally recognised with our Sci-Qual accreditation. Transdev operates domestic and commercial vessels to the National Standard for Commercial Vessels.
